Mary Jane's Crescent Clay Studio

Mary Jane Lundy has been a full time studio ceramic artist since graduating from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University in 2003 with a BFA major in Ceramics. Her home is in East Dover, Nova Scotia since 1985.

She  was currently in a group exhibition November 2010 to mid February 2011, “Sacred Symbol”, Atlantic School of Theology, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Currently in April of this year she’ll be in another group exhibition “Treeology” at the Harvest Gallery, Wolfville, Nova Scotia runs til May 22 and on June  25 to July 14 a solo exhibition “Octopus’s Garden”, The Mooring Gallery, Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia. In 2008 she received a Creation Grant - Nova Scotia Tourism Culture & Heritage to research and to create ceramic water fountains. In June 2009 - Solo exhibition: “Source: Water from the Earth”, at Argyle Fine Arts Gallery, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Also in this year she was in two Group exhibitions: September -“Shaping Space a celebration of Lantz Clay”, Mary E. Black Gallery, Halifax, Nova Scotia and in October “The Art of Food”, Sunbury Shores Arts & Nature Centre, St. Andrews, New Brunswick.

Artist Statement

Mary Jane Lundy’s ceramic studio practice is inspired by the designs of 15th century French ceramist, Bernard Palissy, 14th century Italian ceramist Luca Della Robbia, and 18th century Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi whom used grottos, niches and tombs. Palissy used living things such as frogs, lizards, fish, plant life, and shells in creating plaster castings for clay press molds. Like Palissy, who cast only species from his surrounding area, I have limited my subjects to what inhabits on our land and in our Atlantic Ocean around Nova Scotia.
